State v. otis singleton july 30, 2024 (Jackson, MS) Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announces the successful prosecution in the trial of Otis Singleton who was convicted of second-degree murder for killing 26-year-old Victoria Hollingsworth. On October 29, 2020, Jackson Police Department officers responded to 739 Monterey Street in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Hollingsworth unresponsive and lying in a pool of blood. Singleton fatally shot the victim in the head with an assault-style weapon, after a domestic-related argument over a set of keys. Singleton was arrested and taken into custody. The jury returned…

Hinds County Election Commissioner Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

(Jackson, MS) Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announced that Hinds County Election Commissioner Toni Johnson pled guilty today to two counts of Embezzlement by a Public Official in violation of Mississippi Code Annotated § 97-11-25 and one count of making False Representations to Defraud the Government in violation of Mississippi Code Annotated § 97-7-10.  Johnson, who represented District 2, served as Chairperson of the Hinds County Election Commission in 2020 and again in 2021, until her resignation as Chairperson following the investigation into suspected fraud.  Johnson was indicted on multiple felony charges involving the embezzlement of Hinds…
