The right to vote is a fundamental right that is near and dear to my heart, and something that I ...have always fought for in my career as an attorney. In 2018, while I was the Director of the Mississippi Office of the Southern Poverty Law Center, my colleagues and I filed this suit on behalf of Dennis Hopkins, and other similarly situated individuals, challenging Mississippi’s lifetime voting ban for citizens convicted of certain crimes. Today, in Hopkins v. Hosemann, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, struck down that law, recognizing it as a relic of the State’s 1890 Jim Crow laws.

Today is a landmark day for voting rights in Mississippi. Congratulations to my former colleagues at SPLC, Mr. Hopkins, and all the other citizens who will now have their rights restored!

On the day his murder trial was to begin, Thomas pled guilty to second-degree murder of Yatcey ...Estell and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“While all murders are tragic, it is especially tragic when an innocent bystander is struck down as a result of gun violence in our community,” DA Owens said following the sentencing. “With this conviction and sentence, we continue to send the message that gun violence will not be tolerated in Hinds County.”

Ernest Robinson and Ray Anthony Beasley entered guilty pleas on the eve of their respective trials.... Robinson pleaded guilty on the charge of Aggravated Domestic Violence and will receive 15 years in custody. Beasley pleaded guilty on the charge of statutory rape and is set to be sentenced next month.

“I am proud of the hard work our prosecutors and investigators put into getting these cases ready for trial and ultimately obtaining justice for the victims in these cases,” DA Owens said. “We know we are putting good cases together when, on the day of trial, the defendant sees the State’s case and decides to plead.”
