March 19, 2025

(Jackson, MS) Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announced that on Monday, March 17, 2025, Xavier Gray pleaded guilty to manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault in relation to a fatal shooting that took place in 2022.

On April 22, 2022, Jackson Police responded to a call at 300 West Capitol Street regarding a fatal shooting. Upon arrival, police found a body lying on the street corner in front of a bus station, later identified as 53-year-old Clinton Newsome. Detectives discovered that Gray and three other men who were homeless became involved in a fight following a dispute at Farish Street Park. Gray fired multiple shots at Newsome with a 12-gauge shotgun, killing him at the scene. He then assaulted the other two victims by shooting one in the abdomen and the other in his right leg. After fleeing the scene, Gray was eventually captured, arrested, and taken into custody.

Gray was sentenced to 20 years for manslaughter and 10 years for aggravated assault, with both sentences to run consecutively, to be served in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, stated, “While nothing can bring back the lives affected by this senseless violence; this sentence ensures that Xavier Gray will be held accountable for his actions. Our office remains dedicated to seeking justice for victims and making our community safer from violent crime.”
