group fight turned shootout ends in guilty conviction for Aggravated assault

(Jackson, MS) Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announces a guilty verdict in the trial of Travia Henderson who was convicted of aggravated assault for his attempt to kill Rodriquez Byrd.
On May 27, 2017, Jackson Police Officers found two men had been shot near a home at
the 3800 block of Gammill Street. After an argument ensued, Henderson pulled out a
weapon and fired shots at Washington shooting him multiple times and shooting Byrd in the foot.
Washington was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, whereas Byrd survived but was seriously injured. The suspect fled the scene but was later captured and arrested.
Today after the guilty verdict was announced Henderson was taken into custody and faces up to 20 years for aggravated assault in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
“The Washington family was denied their day in court for far too long. I am proud that our attorneys and investigators never gave up on finally getting some justice for this family. Our office intends to continue to pursue justice for the Washington family by trying his codefendant, Jaylan Henderson for murder while still holding Travia Henderson accountable. Regardless of how old the case is, our office will never stop fighting for the victims of crime. Our thoughts are with the surviving victims and families as they heal from their injuries and the loss of a loved one”, stated District Attorney Owens.
