Driveway Confrontation Leads to
Guilty Plea from Teen in Armed Carjacking Trio

(Jackson, MS) – Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announced that Jacquez Johnson, 19, pled guilty to Armed Carjacking for his role with three other individuals in an armed carjacking and robbery that occurred in Jackson.
On the evening of December 28, 2022, Richard Rhoden was unloading trash from his 2022 Gray Honda Ridgeline outside his home on Gillespie Street when two suspects dressed in dark clothing entered his driveway. One pointed a firearm at him and demanded his keys. Fearing for his life, Rhoden complied, and the suspects entered his vehicle before fleeing toward Jefferson Street. Officers with the Jackson Police Department quickly responded and located the stolen vehicle. A pursuit followed, with the suspects fleeing at high speed until officers forced the truck into a spin. The driver was apprehended immediately, while three passengers, including Johnson, fled by foot from the scene despite repeated commands to stop. Officers pursued and captured Johnson along with Antoine Gibbs and Ladarius Williams.
Jacquez Johnson entered a guilty plea and has been sentenced to 15 years, day for day, in the custody of Mississippi Department of Corrections.
“This was a dangerous crime that left a citizen staring down the barrel of a gun in his own driveaway,” said District Attorney Owens. “Carjackings not only strip people of their property, they rob them of their sense of safety. This plea ensures Mr. Johnson will spend the next 15 years in prison instead of preying on the community.”
