Guilty Verdict in Murder
Stemming from Broken Bottle Dispute

(Jackson, MS) Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announced today that Gregdrick Brown has been found guilty of First-Degree Murder in the shooting death of 36-year-old Tellis May. The fatal incident occurred during an incident in Jackson.
The shooting occurred on November 6, 2021, on West Capitol Street in Jackson. According to the Jackson Police Department, Brown and May had a prior altercation at a days leading up to the incident. Witnesses reported that during the earlier encounter, the victim chased the suspect with a broken beer bottle. Days later, Brown encountered May again. According to Brown, he retrieved a handgun from an unknown individual’s nearby vehicle that was on the scene, then shot May. After the shooting, Brown says he tossed the gun back into the vehicle. May was later found deceased on the sidewalk and had sustained at least one gunshot wound to the face.
Following the shooting, Brown surrendered himself at the Jackson Police Department headquarters. During questioning, Gregdrick Brown admitted to killing Tellis May.
Brown was found guilty of First-Degree Murder and will be sentenced on July 28.
“We cannot normalize gun violence as the response to conflict,” said District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II. “Too many of our communities are stuck in cycles of violence and retaliation. Today’s verdict reflects a commitment to justice and a refusal to let violent acts go unanswered.”
