35-Year Sentence Imposed in
fatal jackson gas station shooting caught on video
May 27, 2026
(Jackson, MS) Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announced that 25-year-old Genesis Moore pleaded guilty to Second-Degree Murder in the shooting death of 45-year-old Christopher Phillips.
On August 20, 2023, officers with the Jackson Police Department responded to the Fuel Express Gas Station in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Christopher Phillips unresponsive inside a silver 2016 Hyundai Elantra. Phillips was pronounced dead on the scene.
Surveillance footage from the gas station showed Phillips sitting inside his vehicle when a white Honda Accord pulled up beside him. One of the suspects exited the vehicle and approached Phillips at the driver’s side window, speaking with him briefly. Phillips then exited his vehicle and walked across the parking lot. Footage showed the suspect informing the others inside the Honda Accord that Phillips had a firearm in his waistband. As Phillips attempted to get back inside his vehicle, one of the suspects attempted to remove the firearm from his waistband. When Phillips reached for his weapon, Genesis Moore, who was seated in the backseat of the Honda Accord, opened fire with a rifle. Phillips and his vehicle were struck multiple times.
Surveillance footage showed the suspects fleeing the scene on foot before one suspect returned and got into the Honda Accord, driving away. Two suspects later turned themselves in to law enforcement. Moore was not apprehended until December 13, 2023, when he was captured in Grenada, Mississippi.
Moore entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to 35 years in prison to be served in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. “This was not a spontaneous act of violence,” said District Attorney Owens. “Multiple individuals armed themselves, pursued the victim through a public gas station, and opened fire in a crowded area. That kind of conduct places countless lives at risk and will be prosecuted aggressively.”
