(Jackson, MS) Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announces on July 31,
2024, Dominique Champion pled guilty during trial to second degree murder and drive- by-shooting in the death of 46-year-old Robert Earl McGowan, Jr.
On June 10, 2021, JPD officers were called to the scene at a local eatery near the
intersection of Ellis Avenue and Robinson Road. Officers found the body of McGowan, Jr. lying on the ground in front of the restaurant with a gunshot wound to the face.
After further investigation and review of surveillance footage, police were able to identify the shooting suspect as 31-year-old Champion who called McGowan towards the vehicle she was operating, opened fire shooting the victim to his death. Champion was later apprehended.
District Attorney Jody Owens stated, “McGowan lost his life in a horrific manner; I hope
the resolution of this case offers comfort and a sense of justice to the victim’s loved ones. We will continue to hold those accountable who exploit weapons and commit violent crimes.”
Champion faces up to 40 (forty) years for second-degree murder and up to 30 (thirty) years for the drive-by-shooting to be served in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Sentencing has been scheduled for August 14, 2024, at 1:30p.m.
