(Jackson, MS) On the third day of trial, Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II announced that a Hinds County jury has found 23-year-old Daniel Jones guilty of two counts of First-Degree Murder in the deaths of Briana Carter and her unborn child.

On January 9, 2022, Jackson Police Department officers were dispatched to 3825 Bishop Avenue, where they discovered that Jones had shot his girlfriend, 20-year-old Briana Carter, multiple times. Carter, who was eight months pregnant, was transported to a local hospital, where she and her unborn child were later pronounced dead. According to authorities, before Carter succumbed to her injuries, she identified Jones as her attacker. Officers later arrested Jones at the downtown Jackson bus station.

Jones received two life sentences and will spend the rest of this life in custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Statement from District Attorney Jody E. Owens II:

“This was a tragic and heartbreaking act of violence that took the life of a young mother and her unborn child. Today’s verdict delivers justice for Briana Carter, her family, and our community. We are grateful for the hard work of the investigators, prosecutors, and jurors who ensured that the truth was brought to light. Our office will continue to stand firm in seeking justice for victims of violent crime in Hinds County.”
