Broomstick killer found guilty of killing girlfriend

(Jackson, MS) Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announces a guilty verdict in the trial of Billy Gibson who was convicted of second-degree murder for killing his girlfriend, 28- year-old Darcie Rich.
On December 24, 2019, Jackson Police Detectives were called to the scene at 6824 Franklin D. Roosevelt where they found Ms. Rich unresponsive. During an altercation on Christmas Eve, Gibson brutally beat Ms. Rich to a comatose stage with a broomstick, wherein she was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Rich succumbed to her injuries and passed away.
It was later revealed by detectives, that the video surveillance did not match the Gibson’s account of what happened, and he was arrested and later charged with Ms. Rich’s murder.
Special Circuit Judge James Bell sentenced Gibson to 40 years to serve with 20 years suspended in the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
DA Owens states, Ms. Rich’s exceptional ten-year-old son was the star witness today in the conviction of his mom’s murderer. I am so proud of the brave prosecutors and investigators who did not give up on this case of senseless and tragic domestic violence. This coward will now spend decades in prison and the Rich family can start the healing process. Our office will never stop fighting for the victims and their families of violent crime.”
