Why Crime Data Matters
Tracking and analyzing criminal activity is essential for enhancing public safety, allocating law enforcement resources effectively, and creating meaningful policy interventions. By understanding what types of crimes are occurring—and where—they occur, law enforcement and community leaders can take targeted steps to prevent crime and protect neighborhoods.
The Hinds County District Attorney’s Office uses advanced prosecution management software (Karpel) to capture and analyze real-time criminal trends. The information below represents general trends in felony indictments in 2025. It does not represent the full scope of real-time data tracked by the DA’s Office.
Violent vs. Non-Violent Crime
Under Mississippi Code Annotated §97-3-2, certain crimes are classified as “crimes of violence.” Individuals convicted of these offenses are not eligible for parole or early release until they have served at least 50% of their sentence. The law defines crimes of violence to include offenses such as:
- Murder & Attempted Murder
- Aggravated Assault
- Manslaughter
- Kidnapping & Human Trafficking
- Rape & Sexual Battery
- Drive-by Shootings
- Armed Robbery & Carjacking
- Burglary of a Dwelling
- Exploitation of a Child
- Statutory Rape
- Use of Explosives or Weapons of Mass Destruction
- Shooting into a Dwelling
- Felonious Child Abuse, Neglect, or Battery
Crime Categories Tracked by the Office
The Hinds County District Attorney’s Office categorizes crimes into the following general types:
- Homicides
- Crimes Against the Person (e.g., assault, attempted murder)
- Sex Crimes & Crimes Against Children
- Property Crimes (e.g., burglary, larceny)
- Firearm Offenses
- Drug Offenses
Countywide Crime Breakdown – 2025
Of the 1,806 felony counts indicted in 2025, 45.2& were violent crimes and 54.8% were non-violent. Nonviolent cases included property crimes, drug crimes, and non-violent firearm offenses such as felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.
Community-Level Crime Data
In addition to countywide tracking, the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office compiles data on criminal indictments by law enforcement agency. This allows the public to better understand what types of crimes are occurring in their own communities and the excellent work law enforcement agencies are doing to address them. A breakdown of each community’s cases by crime category is available and will be updated annually.
